1. Purpose:
This policy outlines the guidelines for incorporating rideshare services (such as Uber and Lyft) into the Orientation and Mobility (O&M) curriculum for high school students at the Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB). The aim is to provide students with practical experience in using these services as part of their independent living skills development.

 

2. Scope:
This policy applies to all high school students enrolled in the O&M curriculum at WSSB.

 

3. Policy Details:

 

3.1. Curriculum Integration:

  • Learning to use rideshare services is an integral part of the WSSB O&M curriculum for high school students who have advanced level of independent travel skills in the community.
  • The curriculum will cover both Uber or Lyft applications.

 

3.2. App Familiarization:

  • Students will receive comprehensive training on the basics of using either Uber or Lyft apps before booking any rides.
  • Training will include app navigation, ride booking, safety features, and troubleshooting.

 

3.3. Practical Application:

  • Once students demonstrate proficiency in using the apps, each student will be able to book up to three single trips under the supervision of their O&M instructor.
  • All rides will be booked using the official WSSB O&M department cell phone, not students' personal devices.
  • Students under the age of 18 will always be accompanied by a WSSB staff member during rides, in accordance with current rideshare policies and WSSB supervision during trips. 
  • Rides will be booked from the rideshare app that containing WSSB credit card information and will submit for supervisors approval for purchase prior to use of each ride and transaction scheduled during student training session. 

 

3.4. Parental Consent:

  • Parents or legal guardians must sign a permission form acknowledging and approving their child's participation in using rideshare services with their O&M instructor.

 

3.5. Trip Limitations:

  • Rides will be limited to a maximum distance of 3 miles from the point of origin.
  • Only one-way trips will be booked as part of the instructional exercise.

 

3.6. Return Trip Planning:

  • Students will learn and practice alternative transportation methods for return trips, reinforcing a broader range of mobility skills.
  • O&M instructors will supervise and assist with the return trip, ensuring student safety while encouraging independence.

 

3.7. Safety Measures:

  • O&M instructors will accompany students on all rideshare trips.
  • Instructors will ensure that all safety protocols provided by the rideshare companies are followed.

 

4. Implementation:

  • O&M instructors will receive training on policy implementation and rideshare app usage.
  • The policy will be reviewed annually by the WSSB administration and O&M department.

 

5. Compliance:
Failure to comply with this policy may result in the restriction of providing rideshare instruction and community travel with students. Any concerns or violations should be reported to the Director On-Campus Programs. 

 

By implementing this policy, WSSB aims to enhance the independence and life skills of its students, preparing them for safe and confident navigation in an increasingly technology-driven world while also reinforcing a comprehensive set of mobility skills.
